معرفی
Pearse Keane is Professor of Artificial Medical Intelligence at University College London's Institute of Ophthalmology and a consultant ophthalmologist at Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. He also serves as Director of the INSIGHT health data research hub programme based at Moorfields Eye Hospital and as Theme Lead for the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre at Moorfields.
His educational background includes:
- Doctor of Medicine from University College Dublin (2010-present)
- MSc (Hons) from University College Dublin
- BMedSci (Hons) from University College Dublin (2002)
- Member of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (2006-present)
Keane's research sits at the intersection of ophthalmology and data science, pioneering the field of oculomics - using retinal images with linked clinical data to build AI systems that detect both eye disease and systemic conditions. His work has established ophthalmology as a leader in AI-enabled healthcare, serving as an exemplar for other medical specialties. He has made significant contributions to AI foundation models in healthcare, particularly with RETFound, and in identifying biomarkers for conditions like Parkinson's disease through retinal imaging.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a strong focus on practical AI implementation in clinical ophthalmology, with particular emphasis on foundation models, diagnostic accuracy across various eye conditions, and extending AI applications to detect systemic diseases through retinal imaging. His work consistently bridges technical AI advances with clinical relevance and real-world implementation challenges.
His major recognitions include:
- UKRI Future Leaders Fellow (since 2020)
- NIHR Senior Investigator (since 2023)
- Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (since 2012)
Keane leads a multi-disciplinary research group of clinician scientists at UCL and Moorfields focused on developing and implementing AI systems in healthcare. His leadership extends to the INSIGHT health data research hub, which manages one of the world's largest eye disease databases. Notably, he initiated the groundbreaking collaboration between Moorfields Eye Hospital and Google DeepMind in 2016, resulting in multiple high-impact publications in journals like Nature Medicine and Nature. His research group actively mentors rising stars in the field, with several notable publications led by his supervisees like Yukun Zhou (RETFound) and Siegfried Wagner (Parkinson's biomarkers).
His laboratory work centers on the INSIGHT health data research hub, which provides infrastructure for large-scale ophthalmic AI research. The group has developed several influential AI algorithms for earlier detection and treatment of retinal disease, with a particular focus on making these tools clinically implementable and accessible.
