Penelope Gouk is an Honorary Research Fellow in the History Department (L5) at The University of Manchester. Previously, she served as a Senior Lecturer in the History Department until her retirement in 2008. She holds a PhD from the Warburg Institute, University of London, and a teacher’s diploma in viola from Trinity College of Music. Her research focuses on the intersection of music, science, and medicine in early modern Europe, particularly exploring how musical practices influenced scientific thought and medical theories about the body and psyche.

Her research outputs span chapters, edited volumes, and articles analyzing musical theories from the Renaissance to the 18th century, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to cultural and scientific history.
Dr. Gouk has contributed to collaborative projects and maintains an active research profile despite her retirement, with a focus on pathbreaking studies in interrelated sub-disciplines.
