Dr. Penelope Nash is an Honorary Associate at the University of Sydney's Medieval and Early Modern Centre, affiliated with the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. She holds a BSc (Sydney), MBA (University of Central Queensland), Dip. Arts (History Honours, Sydney), and PhD (Sydney). Her research focuses on medieval European history, particularly the Ottonian and Salian periods, women’s power dynamics, early medieval art, and historiography. Current projects include the Melocco Project (exploring early 20th-century Italian artisans’ influence by the Book of Kells) and translating Countess Matilda of Tuscany’s Latin letters. She also investigates medieval attire as symbols of power and Jane Austen’s medieval spiritual influences.
Notable awards include a 2022 Commendation (Maddern Prize) and 2018 Runner-Up (Royal Studies Journal Book Award). She is active in associations like ANZAMEMS and the Jane Austen Society of Australia. Public talks include discussions on medieval power symbols and Austen’s historical connections.
