Pelle Ahlerup is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Economics at the University of Gothenburg. His research focuses on Development Economics, Institutional Economics, Natural Disasters, Ethnic Diversity, and Democracy, with a particular emphasis on the political-economic impacts of natural disasters and extreme weather events. He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Gothenburg (2009) and an Associate Professor (Docent) title (2016). Ahlerup serves on the board of ASWEDE (Association of Swedish Development Economists) and has held roles including Post-doc at the Gothenburg Centre of Globalization and Development, and Visiting Researcher at UC Berkeley.
His teaching spans Macroeconomics, International Economics, and Development Economics at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Notable grants include a 4-year Swedish Research Council project (SEK 8 million) on climate change and regime stability (2016–2020), and a project on land investments in Zambia (2013–2015). His work explores topics like the resource curse in African mining regions, drought impacts on political trust and protest behavior, and the long-term effects of ethnic diversity on governance.
Ahlerup’s recent research investigates how droughts influence voter support for incumbents, trust in institutions, and protest participation. His publications appear in top journals including Journal of Development Studies, World Development, and European Journal of Political Economy. Ongoing projects include studies on climate shocks, taxation policies, and the socioeconomic consequences of natural disasters in Africa.
