Dr. Pei Gao is an Assistant Professor at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy (LKYSPP) and Yale-NUS College, National University of Singapore. Her research focuses on Development Economics and Economic History, with a regional emphasis on China. She investigates the historical roots of modern development, particularly the roles of education, health, and technology in shaping economic progress.
Dr. Gao holds a PhD and MSc from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). Prior to NUS, she was an Assistant Professor at NYU-Shanghai and a Global Network Assistant Professor at NYU. Her work spans topics such as human capital development, technological impact, and historical institutional analysis.
Key research themes include the interplay between education systems and long-term growth, infrastructure’s role in stabilizing markets, and the socio-economic factors influencing child development. Her recent studies examine school sanitation’s impact on child safety and telegraph networks’ influence on 19th-century Chinese food markets.
Dr. Gao’s publications appear in top journals like the American Economic Journal: Applied Economics and Economic History Review. She contributes to policy-relevant research on historical development pathways and modern challenges in public health and education.
