Pedro Mateo Pedro is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Toronto. His work focuses on the documentation, acquisition, and revitalization of Mayan languages in Guatemala and Mexico. He collaborates with Indigenous communities and the Academia de las Lenguas Mayas de Guatemala to support endangered languages like Itzaj.
Research interests include ergativity in Mayan languages, verb morphology in Q’anjob’al and Chuj, and the acquisition of linguistic structures such as status suffixes and numeral classifiers. He emphasizes community-driven approaches, training speakers in linguistics and creating teaching materials for revitalization efforts.
His recent publication, Itza' Pedagogical Grammar (2024), reflects his commitment to practical language preservation tools. Collaborations include work with Clifton Pye and Maria Polinsky on documenting Mayan languages like Q’anjob’al, Ch’ol, Mam, and Chuj.
Mateo Pedro works closely with the Comunidad Lingüística Itzaj to revitalize Itzaj, combining academic research with grassroots community engagement. His efforts bridge linguistic theory with applied language preservation strategies.
