Pawel Popiel is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Journalism and Media Production at Washington State University’s Murrow College of Communication. His research focuses on the political economy and regulation of media industries, particularly digital platforms.

His work explores the intersection of media policy, digital governance, and regulatory frameworks, with a focus on competition law, privacy, and platform power. He has co-edited the 2025 book Platforms, Power, and Friction to critically examine platform dynamics.
Popiel’s research has won awards, including the 2023 Privacy Papers for Policymakers award and the 2015 Top Student Paper Awards from AEJMC and TPRC. He is affiliated with the Benton Institute and the Center for Information, Technology, and Public Life (CITAP).
