Pavla Bojarová

Pavla Bojarová serves as a Lecturer at the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering, Czech Technical University in Prague, and holds a continuous appointment as Senior Researcher at the Laboratory of biotransformation, Institute of Microbiology of the Czech Academy of Sciences since 1999.

Her research centers on glycobiology and enzymology with emphasis on glycosidase engineering, galectin inhibition, and biocatalytic synthesis of bioactive compounds. She investigates structural flexibility of enzymes like β-galactosidases to tailor functionalities, develops bacterial sulfotransferases for polyphenol modification, and designs multivalent glycoconjugate inhibitors targeting galectins. Her work bridges fundamental enzyme mechanics with therapeutic applications in diseases including pulmonary hypertension and neurodegenerative disorders.

Analysis of recent publications reveals dominant themes in enzymatic synthesis of glycoconjugates for galectin targeting, O-GlcNAcase inhibition for Alzheimer's disease research, and environmental biotechnology applications. Key innovations include engineered rutinosidases for flavonoid modification, chitin-to-chitooligomer remodeling systems, and glycocalixarene-based cellular delivery platforms. The interdisciplinary approach integrates protein engineering, structural biology, and carbohydrate chemistry to solve biomedical and environmental challenges.

At the Institute of Microbiology, she leads research in the Laboratory of biotransformation where her team applies biocatalytic methods to produce therapeutic glycoconjugates and develop cyanide detoxification systems using nitrilases.
