Prof. Cesar Rodriguez-Emmenegger is an Associate Scientist at the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia and leads the Rodriguez-Emmenegger Group at DWI – Leibniz Institute for Interactive Materials, RWTH Aachen University. His research focuses on adaptive biointerfaces and synthetic cells, combining polymer chemistry, biophysics, and engineering to develop materials that interact with biological systems. Key projects include antifouling coatings, hemocompatible surfaces, and biomimetic vesicles for medical applications.
- PhD in Biophysics from the Czech Academy of Sciences (2012)
- Postdoctoral fellowships at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (2012–2013) and University of Pennsylvania (2013–2015)
- Recipient of Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship, Royal Society of Chemistry Emerging Investigator Award, and multiple grants
Research interests center on designing macromolecules with precise architectures for applications in antithrombogenic coatings, antimicrobial surfaces, and synthetic cells. His work bridges synthetic chemistry with biomedical engineering, addressing challenges in biomaterial compatibility and infection mitigation.
Recent publications highlight advancements in hydrogel coatings, fibrinolytic ECMO systems, and biomimetic vesicles. Awards include the 2020 Innovation Sprint RWTH and recognition in international chemistry Olympiads.
