معرفی
Virgil Percec is the P. Roy Vagelos Professor of Chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania, where he has held a faculty position since 1999. His career includes leadership roles, such as Director of the NSF-Material Research Center at Case Western Reserve University, and prestigious appointments like the Leonard Case Jr. Chair at Case Western Reserve University (1993–1999). He earned his PhD in Macromolecular Chemistry from the “P. Poni” Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry, Romanian Academy, and began his academic career at Case Western Reserve University in 1982.
- Educational Background: Polytechnic Institute, Jassy, Romania (university education); PhD in Macromolecular Chemistry from “P. Poni” Institute, Romania.
Professor Percec’s research bridges organic and macromolecular chemistry, focusing on designing functional macromolecules with controlled architecture. His work includes synthetic mimics of biological membranes, cell mimics inspired by molecular recognition, and dendritic macromolecules for drug delivery and nano-medicine. Over the past two decades, he has pioneered synthetic methodologies to predict primary structures of macromolecules responsible for critical functions, elucidating relationships between dendron structures and self-assembled phases like organic liquid quasicrystals and Frank-Kasper phases.
His scientific contributions include nearly 800 papers, over 80 U.S. patents, and mentorship of 300+ students and postdocs, 70+ of whom hold faculty positions globally. His research has been highlighted in collaborations with institutions like Temple University, Max Planck Institute, and Freie Universität Berlin, including a PNAS 2020 paper on oligomannose-coated synthetic vesicles for coronavirus applications.
- Scientific Awards: 2018 Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher; 2016 Thomson Reuters World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds; 2012 Humboldt Research Award; 2011 Kavli Foundation Innovations in Chemistry Lecture; 2008 Herman F. Mark Medal; 2004 ACS Award in Polymer Chemistry; 2004 AAAS Fellow; 1993 Honorary Foreign Member, Romanian Academy.
He has mentored notable students and collaborators, including Juncheng Lu (MCS Capstone Award, 2022), César Rodriguez-Emmenegger (junior group leader in Spain), Devendra Maurya (MCS Capstone Award, 2020), and Stephanie Korey (co-author of JACS 2006 paper). His editorial contributions span over 30 scientific journals.
