Pauli Keränen serves as a Clinical Instructor at the University of Helsinki's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine within the Department of Equine and Small Animal Medicine. His professional activities focus on clinical veterinary orthopedics with particular expertise in small animal surgery and biomaterial applications for bone regeneration.
Dr. Keränen's research interests span multiple areas of veterinary orthopedics including canine knee injuries, fracture fixation techniques, bone regeneration using biomaterials, and breed-specific orthopedic conditions. His work combines clinical practice with translational research, particularly in developing and testing novel biomaterials for veterinary applications. His research has significantly contributed to understanding osteochondritis dissecans treatments, fracture management in toy-breed dogs, and the application of β-TCP/PLCL composite scaffolds for bone regeneration.
Analysis of Dr. Keränen's publication record reveals a consistent focus on translational orthopedic research with strong clinical relevance. His work demonstrates progression from basic biomaterial testing in animal models to clinical trials in canine patients. The research shows particular emphasis on developing and evaluating novel bone regeneration techniques, with increasing focus on scaffold-based approaches for treating osteochondral defects. Recent publications indicate growing interest in breed-specific orthopedic conditions and specialized fracture management techniques for small breeds.
Dr. Keränen has been actively involved in supervising numerous Master's and Licentiate theses, with students researching topics such as elbow incongruence in dogs, humeral intracondylar fissures, and patellar luxation correction techniques. His research has been supported by foundation funding including the SELS/Luunsiirteenkorvaajatutkimus project and the Osteokondroositutkimus project funded by the Finnish Kennel Club.
As a key member of the Small Animal Orthopedic Research Group (active since 2013), Dr. Keränen collaborates with researchers including Morelius, Heikkilä, Mölsä, Hielm-Björkman, and Hyytiäinen. The group focuses on advancing orthopedic treatments for small animals through both clinical research and biomaterial development.
