معرفی
Paula da Fonseca is a Professor of Cryo-Electron Microscopy in the Department of Molecular Biosciences at the University of Glasgow. She graduated in Biochemistry from the Faculdade de Ciências, Universidade de Lisboa, and earned her PhD from the University of London. Her research focuses on the structure and function of eukaryotic proteasome complexes, particularly human variants, using cryo-EM to advance therapeutic drug development.
Her work has contributed to validating the Plasmodium proteasome as an antimalarial target, enabling the design of specific inhibitors with improved potency. Current projects aim to fully characterize proteasome regulation and extend its targeting for cancer and inflammatory diseases.
- Scientific Awards & Grants:
- Dissecting SCAR/WAVE complex activation (MRC, 2023–2028)
- Modernising EM capabilities at Glasgow (MRC, 2022–2023)
- Understanding proteasome regulation (BBSRC, 2022–2025)
She supervises Nathanael Perkins and collaborates on projects including malaria proteasome inhibition and plant Rubisco activase engineering.
