Paula Truöl is a postdoctoral fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics (MPIM) in Bonn since October 2023, mentored by Arunima Ray. She completed her PhD in Mathematics at ETH Zurich in 2023, under the supervision of Peter Feller and Lukas Lewark. Prior to this, she obtained her Master's degrees from Ulm University (2019) and Syracuse University (2018), and her Bachelor's degree from Ulm University (2016). She has also held a visiting semester at ETH Zurich in 2017–2018.
Her research focuses on low-dimensional topology, particularly knot theory, with emphasis on knot concordance, four-ball genus, braid groups, Garside structures, and 3- and 4-manifolds. She employs tools like Khovanov and Heegaard Floer homology in her work. Paula has co-organized the Low-dimensional topology seminar at MPIM and actively participates in conferences such as Swiss Knots 2025 in Geneva.
Paula teaches the course V5D2 - Selected Topics in Topology: Topics in 3-Manifold Topology at the University of Bonn, covering handle decompositions, Heegaard splittings, Dehn surgery, and JSJ decompositions. Her upcoming talks include presentations at ETH Zurich, Lille, and Regensburg in 2025.
Her research contributions span theoretical advancements in knot concordance and algorithmic approaches to 4-manifold topology, with publications in leading journals such as Algebraic & Geometric Topology and Transactions of the American Mathematical Society.
