Paula Spreckelsen is a Contract PhD researcher at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences, specializing in Clinical Psychology and Experimental Psychopathology. Her research primarily focuses on the intersection of disgust psychology, autobiographical memory, and body image issues.
Her research interests center on disgust-related mechanisms in psychopathology, with particular expertise in self-disgust, body image disturbances, and suicidal ideation. Her work examines how disgust influences memory processing, especially regarding body-related autobiographical memories, and how these processes contribute to the maintenance of various psychological disorders. She employs both experimental and clinical approaches to investigate these phenomena.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals a strong trend toward investigating transdiagnostic mechanisms, particularly disgust-induced avoidant processing of autobiographical memories. Her research spans both basic cognitive processes and clinical applications, with recent work expanding into suicide prevention through sleep interventions. The majority of her publications demonstrate methodological rigor with strong emphasis on empirical validation of theoretical models.
Dr. Spreckelsen has presented her research at multiple academic conferences, including presentations titled 'Escaping from Revulsion,' 'Reliving Disgust in Autobiographical Body-Related Memories,' and 'Averting Repulsion – The Role of Body-Directed Self-Disgust in Autobiographical Memory Retrieval.' She has also contributed to datasets examining the relationships between negative body image, disgust propensity, and self-directed disgust.
