Dr. Paula Satne is a Lecturer in Applied Ethics at the Inter-disciplinary Ethics Applied (IDEA) Centre within the School of Philosophy, Religion and History of Science at the University of Leeds, where she joined in September 2022. She teaches ethics across multiple disciplines including AI and data science, dentistry, business, engineering, computing science, environmental sciences, and journalism. Her position builds upon previous academic roles as Senior Lecturer at the University of Wolverhampton, Lecturer at the University of Manchester, Teaching Fellow at Durham University, and Lecturer at Keele University.
Dr. Satne completed her PhD in Philosophy at the University of Manchester with a thesis on 'Kant's Theory of Motivation and Rational Agency' following a First Class Honors degree in Philosophy from Universidad de Buenos Aires, where she graduated with a thesis on 'Aristotle's Eudaimonia from the Eudemian Ethics Point of View.' Her academic background spans both analytic and continental philosophical traditions with expertise in Kantian ethics, moral psychology, and political philosophy.
Her research program centers on theoretical and applied ethics, particularly examining human evil and the ethics of forgiveness, memory, and commemoration in both personal and political contexts. She explores how political forgiveness relates to public commemoration, transitional justice, pacifism, punishment, and conflict resolution, with particular attention to structural injustice regarding climate change, poverty, and international relations. Her work also engages with moral development, repentance, self-affirmation, and the history of ethics, especially Kant, Aristotle, Spinoza, Hegel, and Sartre.
Dr. Satne's scholarly output reveals consistent thematic development around forgiveness ethics and Kantian moral theory, with increasing attention to political applications of ethical concepts. Her recent work shows a sophisticated integration of continental and analytic philosophical methods applied to contemporary political challenges, particularly regarding memory politics and transitional justice. The interdisciplinary nature of her research connects philosophical theory with practical ethical concerns across multiple domains of human activity.
Her scientific recognition includes being a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She is also an active member of several professional organizations including the Society of Women in Philosophy, Aristotelian Society, UK Kant Society, and serves as UK Representative for the Spanish/Latin American Network 'Kant: Ethics, Politics and Society.'
At Leeds, Dr. Satne supervises MA dissertations across the IDEA Centre's programs and has designed and taught diverse philosophy modules including ethics, political philosophy, philosophy of mind, history of philosophy, aesthetics, and philosophical methods. She is particularly engaged with applying ethical frameworks to emerging technologies and professional disciplines, reflecting the interdisciplinary mission of the IDEA Centre.
Dr. Satne is originally from Argentina and publishes in both English and Spanish. She is part of the research network on Forgiveness and Reconciliation within the Historical Memory, Peace, Human Rights and Reconciliation Research Group at UIC-Barcelona, demonstrating her international scholarly engagement with ethical questions of memory and justice.
