Dr. Paula Noble is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Geological Sciences and Engineering at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR). She holds a PhD in Geology from The University of Texas at Austin (1993) and a B.A. in Paleontology from the University of California, Berkeley (1985). Her primary affiliation is within the Mackay School of Earth Sciences and Engineering, where she leads research initiatives in paleolimnology and micropaleontology.
Her research focuses on using siliceous microfossils (radiolarians, diatoms) and sedimentary geochemistry to study paleoenvironmental changes, earthquake impacts on groundwater systems, and the evolution of marine plankton. Key projects include analyzing lake sediments for paleoseismic records, reconstructing Holocene climate changes, and studying Triassic ichthyosaurs from Nevada’s Luning Formation. She also maintains an active radiolarian lab, specializing in biostratigraphic applications for tectonic and stratigraphic studies.
Dr. Noble’s work bridges geology and environmental science, with recent studies addressing anthropogenic impacts in mountain lakes and seismic responses in karst aquifers. Her courses include GEOL 101 (Physical Geology), GEOL 461 (Paleobiology), and GEOL 763 (Paleolimnology). She collaborates with institutions globally, utilizing advanced microscopy facilities like the Mackay School’s Microbeam Lab for high-resolution imaging and geochemical analysis.
Her publications highlight interdisciplinary approaches, such as combining diatom analysis with sedimentary DNA to trace long-term environmental shifts.
