Kevin Shoemaker is an Associate Professor in the Department of Natural Resources & Environmental Science at the University of Nevada, Reno, where he directs the Applied Population Ecology Lab. His research focuses on conservation biology, population modeling, and evidence-based wildlife management, with particular emphasis on threatened species in the Great Basin and beyond.
Dr. Shoemaker holds a B.S. from Haverford College (2000), M.S. from SUNY (2007), and Ph.D. from SUNY (2011). His lab develops statistical and simulation tools to address conservation challenges, with current projects investigating tortoise ecology, pygmy rabbit conservation, and the impacts of mining on pronghorn habitat selection.
His applied work informs species recovery programs and conservation policy, including critical evaluations of existing protection strategies. Recent publications address conservation modeling flaws, translocation genetics, and fire management effectiveness, demonstrating his commitment to robust science-policy interfaces in conservation practice.
