Paula Lum, MD, MPH is a Clinical Professor of Medicine and founding Program Director of the UCSF Primary Care Addiction Medicine Fellowship at San Francisco General Hospital. She has been a faculty member in the Division of HIV, Infectious Diseases, and Global Medicine since 1999. Her work focuses on the intersection of HIV, addiction, and poverty, with a commitment to evidence-based, patient-centered care for vulnerable populations.
Education: Stanford University (B.A. Human Biology, M.A. Sociology), Case Western Reserve University (M.D.), University of California, Berkeley (M.P.H. Epidemiology), and UCSF (Residency in Primary Care Internal Medicine and Fellowship in AIDS Prevention Studies). She completed a 2019 Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Champion Training at UCSF.
Research Interests: HIV and viral hepatitis prevention/treatment in substance users; evidence-based interventions for unhealthy substance use; curricular development for healthcare providers. Her work emphasizes marginalized populations and systemic barriers to care.
Awards: Over 15 major awards including the Meg Newman Teaching Excellence Award (2024), W. Anderson Spickard Mentorship Award (2019), and Norman E. Zinberg Award (2019).
Grants/Advising: Principal Investigator on multiple NIH-funded studies, including the HERO trial evaluating HCV treatment models for injection drug users. Founded the UCSF Primary Care Addiction Medicine Fellowship Program.
