Christine Soran is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), based at San Francisco General Hospital (SFGH). She serves as a primary care clinician and educator at the Richard Fine People's Clinic and as Medical Director of the Outpatient Buprenorphine Induction Clinic (OBIC) through the Division of Substance Use and Addiction Medicine. Dr. Soran is faculty for both the UCSF Internal Medicine San Francisco General Primary Care Residency and the UCSF Primary Care Addiction Medicine Fellowship.
Dr. Soran earned her undergraduate degree in Political Science and Philosophy from Boston College, followed by a Master of Public Health from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (2010), where she was inducted into Delta Omega Honorary Society. She received her MD from the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine (2014), where she was honored with the Gold Humanism Honor Society. Her clinical training includes Internal Medicine residency in the UCSF San Francisco General Primary Care track (2017), a chief resident year, and the UCSF Primary Care Addiction Medicine Fellowship (2019), plus UCSF's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Champion Training (2021).
Dr. Soran's research focuses on integrating addiction medicine into primary care, particularly examining the relationship between substance use and chronic pain management. Her work emphasizes patient-empowered clinical care and building trustworthiness in medical practice. She has pioneered low-barrier clinical protocols for buprenorphine initiation, especially for patients using fentanyl, with publications in high-impact journals including JAMA Network Open and Harm Reduction Journal. Her research has evolved from early work in medical informatics to current innovations in addiction treatment access and safety.
Her recent publications (2022-2025) demonstrate significant contributions to harm reduction strategies, particularly in developing community-based approaches to buprenorphine treatment for patients using fentanyl. These studies address critical gaps in the field as the opioid crisis has evolved with synthetic opioids, providing evidence for safer, more accessible treatment models that reduce barriers while maintaining clinical safety.
