Paula Alves

Paula M. Alves is a Professor at NOVA University of Lisbon and serves as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of iBET, leading the Cell Bioprocesses Lab. Her career spans over three decades in Animal Cell Technology, integrating cell metabolism with biochemical engineering to enhance bioprocess efficiency.

Her research focuses on:

• Production of biopharmaceuticals (viral vectors, vaccines)
• Development of 3D culture systems in bioreactors for stem cell expansion/differentiation
• Applications in cell therapy, regenerative medicine, and in vitro toxicology

Paula has published over 350 papers and supervised 40+ PhD students, 18 postdocs, and numerous master’s theses. She has received multiple scientific accolades, including the ESACT Medal and recognition as one of Portugal’s 100 Top Women Scientists (2017).
