Paul Shapiro is a Professor at the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Maryland School of Pharmacy. His research focuses on mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinases, particularly ERK1/2 and p38 families, and their roles in cancer and inflammatory diseases. He holds a Ph.D. in Molecular Physiology and Biophysics from the University of Vermont (1995) and completed postdoctoral training at the University of Colorado-Boulder.
- Research Interests: Selective regulation of MAP kinases using structural and computational biology to develop small molecules for cancer and inflammation.
- Education: B.S. in Bacteriology (University of Wisconsin-Madison, 1987), Ph.D. in Molecular Physiology and Biophysics (University of Vermont, 1995).
His work has led to clinical trials for a p38 modulator in acute respiratory distress syndrome and collaborations with biotech companies like GEn1E Lifesciences. He emphasizes interdisciplinary teamwork and mentoring trainees, with former students now in academia, industry, and government roles.
