Paul Shanks is a Lecturer in English and Drama at the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) in Inverness. He also tutors Creative Writing with High Life Highland’s Adult Literacies program and runs the Glints of Gold Writing Group in Inverness. His professional roles span academia, community arts, and social enterprise.
Previously, he was affiliated with Aberdeen University’s School of Language and Literature and the Research Institute of Irish and Scottish Studies (RIISS), specializing in 20th-century Irish and Scottish literature and diaspora studies. He contributed to interdisciplinary research on migration impacts through historical, geographic, and literary lenses. Later, he worked with Turning Point Scotland, supporting individuals with mental health challenges and addiction in gaining workplace confidence through employment readiness programs.
His creative output includes poetry, fiction, and drama. Selected publications appear in Causeway/Cabhsair and The Interpreter’s House. He actively collaborates with community initiatives like Bats in Action theatre group and HUG (Action for Mental Health), co-producing anthologies such as Reclaim and A Feast for All.
Shanks integrates academic expertise with grassroots arts facilitation, emphasizing mental health advocacy and cultural sustainability. His work bridges literary research, creative writing pedagogy, and community engagement in the Highlands.
