Dr Mandy Haggith is a Lecturer in Creative Writing and Literature at the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) Inverness, and an Honorary Research Fellow at the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS). She holds a PhD in Artificial Intelligence from the University of Edinburgh, alongside degrees in Philosophy, Mathematics, and Creative Writing. Her research focuses on poetic inquiry and creative practice methodologies to address environmental challenges, particularly climate change, nature writing, and interdisciplinary learning.
Her academic journey includes foundational work in AI, 20 years of forest activism, and leadership in projects like the Liminal Zone (exploring coastal metaphors for creative practice) and Peat, Diesel & Seaweed (poetic exploration of climate action). She co-founded UHI’s A/R/Tography group, blending art, research, and teaching. Her awards include the Robin Jenkins Literary Award (2009).
Mandy’s teaching spans undergraduate to PhD levels, emphasizing innovative outdoor and digital pedagogy. She leads the arts strand in the Community Land Academic Network and contributes to environmental policy initiatives. Her creative output includes 15 books (novels, poetry collections, and non-fiction), with recent works like Briny (2023) and The Lost Elms (2025).
Her research collaborations bridge marine science, Gaelic cultural heritage (e.g., A-B-Tree projects), and community engagement. She lives in a coastal croft in Assynt, actively sailing and advocating for sustainable coastal communities.
