Dr Paul S Ell is a Senior Research Fellow at Queen's University Belfast, currently based in the School of Natural and Built Environment. He also directs the Centre for Data Digitisation and Analysis (CDDA) and the Spatial Technologies Research Forum. With over 25 years of academic experience since joining Queen's University in 1993, Dr Ell has established himself as a leading figure in historical geography and digital humanities.
Dr Ell's educational background includes:
- Undergraduate studies at the University of Keele in History and Geography with Statistics and American Studies
- Master's in English Local History at Leicester University
- PhD from the Department of Geography at the University of Birmingham
His research spans historical geography, digital humanities, information management, historical maps, temporal geographical information systems, e-Science, and Grid computing. Dr Ell has made significant contributions to understanding religious geographies, particularly in Victorian Britain and Ireland, and has pioneered methods for digitizing and analyzing historical census data. His work bridges traditional humanities scholarship with cutting-edge computational approaches, creating new pathways for spatial analysis of historical phenomena.
Dr Ell's publication record demonstrates a consistent trajectory from traditional historical geography toward increasingly sophisticated digital humanities approaches. His early work focused on religious geographies and the Irish Famine, while more recent publications emphasize digital methodologies, place-name studies, and mobile data collection technologies. This evolution reflects his leadership in transitioning humanities scholarship toward digital and spatial approaches.
Dr Ell has received exceptional recognition for his research proposals, with reviewers consistently noting his expertise and successful track record.
Dr Ell has successfully secured over 80 research grants totaling more than £9.3 million from prestigious funders including the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), and National Science Foundation (NSF). His grant applications consistently receive 'Outstanding' ratings following peer review.
As Director of the Centre for Data Digitisation and Analysis, Dr Ell leads a team of 10 staff members and oversees numerous international collaborations. The Centre has developed a mobile digitization unit capable of working across the UK, Ireland, Europe, and North America. Dr Ell has established formal partnerships with institutions including UC Berkeley, Academia Sinica, and IUPUI, positioning the CDDA as a globally recognized center for digital humanities research.
