Dr. Paul Roepe is a Professor at Georgetown University, affiliated with the Chemistry Department, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Department, and the Tumor Biology Program at the Lombardi Cancer Center. He holds a B.A. (1982) and Ph.D. (1987) from Boston University, followed by postdoctoral research at the Roche Institute, UCLA, and Sloan-Kettering Institute. His work focuses on membrane transport mechanisms, drug resistance in cancer and malaria, and antimalarial drug development. He has received awards including the Burroughs Wellcome New Initiative Award (1999) and is a Faculty of 1000 member since 2006.
Research interests combine biophysical, biochemical, and chemical approaches to study drug resistance in parasites and tumors. Key projects involve Plasmodium falciparum drug resistance proteins and novel antimalarial drug design. Collaborations span institutions like NIH, Johns Hopkins, and Columbia University. He secured NIH grants for malaria research and contributed to interdisciplinary efforts in drug development.
His lab employs techniques like confocal microscopy, recombinant DNA, and synthetic chemistry. Notable achievements include elucidating PfCRT’s role in drug resistance and advancing antimalarial therapies. Grants include an NIH-NIAID award (2005) for drug-resistant malaria research.
