Dr. Paul Overly serves as a Professor in the Department of Performance Studies within Bob Jones University's School of Fine Arts and Communication. With over thirty-five years of teaching experience, he instructs courses in brass performance, music history, and specialized instrument instruction while mentoring students toward careers as performers and educators.
His academic credentials include:
- DMus in Music Performance (Brass) from Florida State University
- MMus in Brass from Bob Jones University
- BA in Orchestral Instrument from Bob Jones University
Dr. Overly's research centers on Brass Performance mechanics and psychology, examining physical/psychological processes in low brass execution. His scholarship extends to Music History (Antiquity to Contemporary periods), enhanced by European musical site visits, and incorporates Music Theory through studies in analysis, aesthetics, and modern philosophy. His pedagogical approach emphasizes expressing "the beauty of their Creator through music."
As an active International Trombone Association member, he has published over fifty literature reviews in the ITA Journal. His performance career includes engagements with the Tallahassee Symphony, GAMAC Chamber Orchestra, Spartanburg Philharmonic, and Greenville Symphony. Dr. Overly maintains ongoing mentorship of low brass students while continuing advanced performance studies with renowned instructors including John Marcellus and William Cramer.
