Paul Ortiz is a Professor of History and Director of the Samuel Proctor Oral History Program at the University of Florida. His research focuses on African American, Latinx, and labor history. He authored An African American and Latinx History of the United States and Emancipation Betrayed, and co-edited volumes like People Power. A labor rights activist, he received the César Chávez Awards and led the United Faculty of Florida. His work bridges academia and activism, addressing racial justice and social movements.
Education: PhD in History (Duke University, 2000), BA (Evergreen State College, 1990), AA (Olympic College, 1988). Military service: 82nd Airborne Division and 7th Special Forces Group. Awards include the PEN Award and Society of American Archivists’ Diversity Award.
Advocacy includes fighting book bans targeting works like his own, and collaborations with PBS (e.g., The Black Church, American Historia). He co-founded the Samuel Proctor Oral History Program, recognized globally for its social justice focus.
