Paul A Ortiz is a Professor of Labor History at Cornell University’s ILR School and an affiliate faculty member of Cornell’s Latino Studies Program. He joined Cornell in 2024 after serving as Director of the Samuel Proctor Oral History Program and Professor of History at the University of Florida. Dr. Ortiz earned his doctorate in History from Duke University in 2000 and previously taught at the University of California, Santa Cruz (2001–2008).

Dr. Ortiz’s research spans Labor History, African American and Latinx Studies, and Oral History. His works critically examine racial capitalism, imperialism, and coalition-building across marginalized communities. Recent publications focus on the Ocoee Massacre, 2024 labor trends, and Who Built America?’s epilogue. His forthcoming A Social Movement History of the United States (Beacon Press) continues this legacy.
Dr. Ortiz has received numerous scientific awards, including the PEN Oakland-Josephine Miles Literary Award (2018), Choice Outstanding Academic Title (2018), and the Stetson Kennedy Vox Populi Award (2013). He has secured significant grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, and National Park Service, focusing on oral history revitalization, Native American narratives, and labor studies. He has lectured extensively on Black and Latinx solidarity, academic freedom, and resisting authoritarianism in public institutions.
