Dr. Paul Moore is a Professor and Undergraduate Program Director in the Department of Sociology at Toronto Metropolitan University. He holds a BSc from Mount Allison University, an MSc from Queen’s University, and a PhD in Sociology from York University. His research focuses on media history, urban modernity, and the cultural dimensions of mass society. Moore explores how leisure and amusement shaped public culture in North America, particularly through studies of early cinema, newspapers, and diasporic film distribution.

Moore’s work includes The Sunday Paper: A Media History (2022), which examines the role of weekend newspapers in institutionalizing mass society. He has also co-authored research on diasporic film networks, such as Italian- and Chinese-language cinemas in Canada. His current projects investigate Hollywood’s collaboration with Madison Avenue in advertising campaigns and the historical relationship between railways and cinema in rural Canada.
His recent publications analyze topics like Paramount Pictures’ distribution strategies, diasporic film advertising, and early cinema’s material culture. Moore actively contributes to media history preservation through roles like Canada Lead of the Media History Digital Library and co-director of the York-Toronto Metropolitan University Communication and Culture graduate program.
Moore has served on the University Senate, led the Arts & Contemporary Studies program, and organized major academic conferences such as the 7th International HOMER Network Conference on movie exhibition history. His community work includes digitizing Canadian film trade journals and documenting thousands of historic cinema venues across the country.
