Dr Alexander Fisher is a Senior Lecturer in Film at Queen's University Belfast's School of Arts, English and Languages. He specializes in the political dimensions of sound and music in international cinema, with a focus on sub-Saharan African cinemas and global film cultures. His research explores postcolonialism, Third Cinema, diasporic narratives, and the impact of online distribution platforms like Netflix on global film access.
He has supervised PhD students such as Claudia Bossay (2013) and Jennie Carlsten (2012), both now in academic roles. Fisher has held roles including Director of Graduate Studies (2025–present) and External Examiner for Trinity College Dublin's BA Film program. His major publications include World Cinema On Demand (2022) and several articles on African film distribution and cultural branding in the digital age.
His work bridges film studies with digital humanities, addressing how global streaming services reshape access to non-Western cinemas. He has secured grants like the AHRC-funded 'World Cinema On Demand' project (2012–2014), emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to cinema's evolving landscape.
