He holds a PhD from the University of Technology Sydney (2004), a Master from the University of Melbourne (1997), and a Bachelor (BA Hons) from the University of Melbourne (1994).
His research interests span poetry, poetics, intellectual history, and Freudian/Lacanian psychoanalysis. He explores connections between everyday speech and poetic composition, the relationship between art and knowledge, and critiques of national identity. Recent projects include We Come from the Past: Indigeneity, Orality and the Flow of Culture, a collaborative effort involving Indigenous communities in New South Wales, and Understanding Creative Excellence: A Case Study in Poetry, which involved interviews with 80 poets to analyze poetic thought processes.
His work trends toward interdisciplinary approaches, blending literary analysis with cultural studies and cognitive science. Projects often emphasize oral traditions, Indigenous knowledge systems, and the intersection of creativity with societal structures.
