Paul Lombardo is the Regents’ Professor and Bobby Lee Cook Professor of Law at Georgia State University’s College of Law. He specializes in the legal history of the American eugenics movement, health law, medico-legal history, and bioethics. Lombardo holds a J.D. from the University of Virginia and a bachelor’s degree from Rockhurst College.
His research focuses on landmark cases like Buck v. Bell, which upheld compulsory sterilization laws. He authored two seminal books on eugenics and its legal implications. Lombardo previously taught at the University of Virginia’s Law and Medicine schools, directing the Center for Mental Health Law and the Program in Law and Medicine.
He served as a senior adviser to the Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues (2011–2016) and spearheaded a historical marker in Charlottesville commemorating the Buck v. Bell case. His work has been featured on NPR, CBS, and CNN.
