Paul Kiparsky is the Robert M. and Anne T. Bass Professor of Linguistics at Stanford University, affiliated with the School of Humanities and Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. from MIT (1965) and has been at Stanford since 1984. His research focuses on phonology, historical linguistics, morphology, and metrics, with notable contributions to Optimality Theory, Sanskrit grammar, and language typology.
Education: B.A. University of Helsinki (1961), M.A. University of Minnesota (1962), Ph.D. MIT (1965). Prior to Stanford, he taught at MIT (1965–1984). He has supervised over 40 Ph.D. students, many now leading academics globally.
Research interests include phonological typology, grammaticalization, and the interplay between syntax and phonology. His recent work explores vowel harmony, stratal OT, and Indo-European metrics. He is a recipient of prestigious awards like the Humboldt Prize and multiple honorary doctorates.
