Paul Jivoff is a Professor and Department Chair at Rider University's Department of Biology and Behavioral Neuroscience. He joined the faculty in 2002 after completing postdoctoral work at the Smithsonian Marine Station and Rutgers University Marine Field Station.
- B.A. Biology, Hartwick College (1983)
- M.S. Environmental Biology, Ohio State University (1986)
- Ph.D. Zoology, University of Maryland (1995)
Dr. Jivoff's research focuses on the behavioral ecology of marine animals, particularly blue crabs (Callinectes sapidus). His work examines mating behavior, sperm limitation, habitat quality impacts from artificial shorelines, and effects of urbanization and fishing pressure on blue crab populations in Barnegat Bay, NJ. His studies integrate field ecology with conservation biology to inform marine management practices.
Recent publications highlight trends in habitat conservation, fisheries management, and behavioral responses to environmental stressors. His research team frequently includes undergraduate collaborators, emphasizing hands-on marine science education.
Dr. Jivoff has secured multiple grants from the Barnegat Bay Estuary Program (2005-2008, 2009-2011, 2010-2011) and NJ-Department of Environmental Protection (2011-2013, 2016) to study blue crab population dynamics, reproductive potential, and ecological impacts of human activities.
He teaches foundational courses including Principles of Biology II (BIO-116), Introduction to Marine Biology (BIO 272), Behavior of Marine Organisms (BIO 372), and interdisciplinary courses like Science and Politics of the NJ Shore (BHP 232).
