Professor Paul Jarvis is a Professor of Plant Cell Biology at the University of Oxford, affiliated with the Section of Molecular Plant Biology in the Department of Biology. His research focuses on chloroplast biogenesis, plastid protein import mechanisms, and the role of the ubiquitin-proteasome system in regulating organelle development. He has held roles such as Royal Society Rosenheim Research Fellow and Human Frontier Science Program Fellow, contributing to both fundamental and applied plant biology research.
- Education:
- BSc in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry, University of Durham (1989–1992)
- PhD in Molecular Plant Biology, John Innes Centre, Norwich (1992–1996)
- Award Highlights: Royal Society Rosenheim Research Fellow (2000–2008), Human Frontier Science Program Fellow (1996–1998), Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship (2025–2026).
His research explores mechanisms of chloroplast protein import and ubiquitin-mediated regulation, with applications in crop improvement. Notable discoveries include the identification of the SP1 ubiquitin E3 ligase, which regulates chloroplast biogenesis and stress tolerance. His work has implications for enhancing crop yield and stress resilience through manipulation of the CHLORAD pathway.
Lab members include postdoctoral researchers and students investigating topics such as chloroplast-associated degradation, protein import machinery assembly, and stress signaling. Funding includes grants from BBSRC, NIAB, and the European Commission.
