Paul Huffman is a Professor and Department Head in the Department of Physics at North Carolina State University, affiliated with the College of Sciences. He holds a joint appointment with the Physics Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and is a member of the Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory. His career includes postdoctoral work at Harvard University and a staff role at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
Education: B.S. in Physics from NC State (1990), M.A. (1992) and Ph.D. (1995) in Physics from Duke University.
Research focuses on neutron-based experiments to probe the Standard Model and weak interaction through beta decay and neutron-nucleon processes. Key areas include neutron source development (e.g., ultra-cold neutrons for precision measurements), neutron imaging for fuel cells, and cryogenic apparatus design. Recent work emphasizes ultra-cold neutron production, neutron spin dynamics, and precision measurements of neutron properties.
Publications highlight advancements in neutron polarization systems, reactor neutron moderation, and cryogenic deuterium growth for UCN facilities. Experimental methodologies span low-temperature physics, precision beam characterization, and statistical decay analysis.
Paul’s roles include leadership in academic administration and collaborations across national laboratories. He contributes to facilities like the Spallation Neutron Source at ORNL and maintains active involvement in interdisciplinary projects linking nuclear physics with engineering applications.
