Maxime Brodeur is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Notre Dame, part of the College of Science. His research focuses on answering fundamental questions about the universe’s heaviest elements and testing the Standard Model through precision measurements of atomic masses and half-lives of unstable nuclei. He leads the development of the St. Benedict facility to study beta decays and operates the Nuclear Science Laboratory for precision experiments.
Brodeur holds a Ph.D. (2010) from the University of British Columbia and a B.Sc. (2003) from Université de Montréal. He has held faculty positions at Notre Dame since 2013 and was named the Ortenzio Family Assistant Professor in 2015.
His research interests include low-energy nuclear physics, precision mass measurements, and astrophysical processes like the rapid neutron capture (r-process). Key areas of focus are exotic nuclei, beta decay dynamics, and Standard Model validation. His work combines experimental techniques like Penning traps and multi-reflection time-of-flight spectrometers with advanced facilities like the N=126 Factory at Argonne National Laboratory.
Recent studies highlight precision mass measurements of neutron-rich isotopes and mirror transitions, contributing to nuclear astrophysics and particle physics. Brodeur has secured over $20M in grants, including NSF funding for the Notre Dame Nuclear Science Laboratory and facility development.
He mentors numerous graduate and undergraduate students, advising on projects ranging from beta decay experiments to multi-nucleon transfer reactions. Brodeur also chairs committees for graduate recruitment and colloquia at Notre Dame and serves on national and international review panels.
