Paul Horrocks is a Professor of Molecular Parasitology and Director of Medical Sciences at Keele University, UK. He leads research on Plasmodium falciparum biology, focusing on gene expression regulation, antimalarial drug discovery, and parasite pathogenesis. His roles include Strategic Lead for Postgraduate Research Programmes and oversight of serious discipline cases. He holds a BSc from UMIST and a PhD from the University of Edinburgh (1996), with postdoctoral training at the University of Würzburg and the Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine, Oxford. His research integrates molecular biology, bioinformatics, and drug screening, with collaborations across academia and industry.
Teaching roles include designing curricula for Keele’s MBChB programme, leading the Professional Knowledge theme, and supervising undergraduate and postgraduate students. He has been recognized with multiple teaching awards, including the Keele Student Union Superb Supervisor Award (2015, 2016) and a Times Higher Education Nomination for student support (2018).
Research interests emphasize antimalarial drug development, including epigenetic regulation, bioluminescence-based drug assays, and novel compound screening. He co-leads the Centre for Applied Entomology and Parasitology (CAEP), fostering interdisciplinary collaborations. His lab has produced over 50 peer-reviewed articles, with recent work exploring natural product-derived antiparasitics and G-quadruplex DNA drug targets.
Awards include the BBSRC New Investigator Award (2009–2012) and Royal Society Relocation Fellowship (2005). He serves on editorial boards for Case Reports in Infectious Disease and ISRN Tropical Medicine, and has mentored over 30 students across PhD, MSc, and undergraduate programs. His funding portfolio spans £ millions from BBSRC, Wellcome Trust, and international partnerships.
