Paul Geary is a Lecturer in Drama at the University of East Anglia (UEA), leading the Theatre, Performance and Scriptwriting research group within the School of Literature, Drama and Creative Writing. Previously, he held roles at the University of Birmingham and other institutions. He earned a PhD from the University of Bristol. His research explores five key areas: experimental dining and performance, Heideggerian performance philosophy, Live Art, practice-as-research methodologies, and socio-economic diversity in the creative industries. Geary has collaborated with artists, theatre companies, and restaurants, contributing to projects like the AHRC-funded Incubate/Propagate research network. He currently directs UEA’s BA Drama and related programs.
Research interests include interdisciplinary performance practices, sensory experience frameworks, and the intersection of class and artistic production. His work often bridges theory and practice, emphasizing embodied methodologies. Geary’s peer-reviewed publications span journals like Performance Research and edited volumes on performance philosophy and experimental dining. He serves on the AHRC Peer Review College and advised Gecko Theatre (2021–2023). His 2022 book Experimental Dining examines the ideological dimensions of contemporary culinary experiences.
Geary’s academic contributions reflect a commitment to expanding access to arts education and challenging socio-economic barriers in creative fields. His advisory roles and grants underscore his influence in shaping contemporary performance discourse.
