Paul Gaffney is an Associate Professor and Assistant Chair in the Department of Philosophy at St. John's University, part of the St. John's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. He has been affiliated with the university since 1989, serving as Chair since 2007. His research focuses on Philosophy of Law, Philosophy of Language, Ethics, and Philosophy of Sport.
- Education: Ph.D. in Philosophy (The Catholic University of America, 1991), M.A. in Philosophy (1988), B.S. in Biology (Niagara University, 1981).
Dr. Gaffney has held a Visiting Fellowship at the University of North Dakota's Institute for Public Philosophy (2009) and received grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities and Heritage Foundation. He contributes to academic governance as Councilor of the Metaphysical Society of America and Editorial Board member of the Journal of the Philosophy of Sport. He is currently writing a book titled Competition as Ideal: The Structure and Meaning of Antagonistic Relationships.
Teaching highlights include leading courses in Business Ethics and summer programs in Rome, Italy, since 1996.
