Paul Echeverria serves as Assistant Professor of Digital and Emerging Media in the Department of Communication at Wayne State University, joining in fall 2020. His interdisciplinary practice bridges filmmaking, digital art, and emerging technologies with critical explorations of family structures and human-technology collisions.
His academic credentials include:
- MFA in Studio Arts, Interdisciplinary Media Arts Practice from University of Colorado Boulder (2014)
- MA in Media Studies from The New School (2011)
- MS in Education with Bilingual Extension from Mercy College (2006)
- BFA in Film from Purchase College, SUNY (1996)
Echeverria's creative research manifests through film, augmented/virtual reality, performance, social media, and data-driven projects. His works interrogate childhood, parenthood, and technological mediation while being exhibited globally at institutions including MoMA, Anthology Film Archives, and the Ann Arbor Film Festival.
His award-winning debut feature Sol y Lluvia received Best Foreign Language Film at the Long Island Film Festival. Additional recognition stems from curation roles at Southern Colorado Film Festival, Experiments in Cinema, and Ann Arbor Film Festival.
Prior to Wayne State, Echeverria founded Western Connecticut State University's Digital and Interactive Media Arts (DIMA) program and has served on the Millennium Film Workshop board since 2016. He teaches courses including COM 1610 (Fundamentals of New Media Production) and COM 6090 (Digital Screen Media), with upcoming instruction in COM 5440 (Film, Cinematography and Lighting) for Fall 2025.
