Deatherage's teaching philosophy emphasizes the importance of 'living solely in the present moment, trusting one another, creating, and grooving with a deep pocket.' He leads a varied teaching career spanning middle school, high school, and college levels, while maintaining a private studio at Don Wilson Music in Lexington. His professional approach reflects Calvin Coolidge's wisdom about persistence being 'omnipotent' in musical development.
He performs regularly with multiple ensembles including the DiMartino/Osland Jazz Orchestra, Osland/Dailey Jazztet, Raleigh Dailey Trio, Walnut Street Ramblers, Ross Whitaker Trio, and Grupo LexiSamba, demonstrating his commitment to both educational and professional musical communities.
