Jim Rupp

Jim Rupp is an Associated Faculty member in Jazz Drum Set at The Ohio State University School of Music. He is actively involved with the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra, Cleveland Pops Orchestra, and has toured with notable artists such as Woody Herman, Maynard Ferguson, and Diane Schuur. His career spans performances with Tony Bennett, Ray Charles, and others, alongside orchestras in major cities like Boston, Dallas, and Nashville.

As an educator, Rupp has taught at Indiana University and the University of Michigan. He co-authored the drum set method book Baby Steps to Giant Steps and received the 2021 Outstanding Alumni Award from his alma mater’s School of Music. He is a former chair of the Percussive Arts Society’s Drum Set Committee and a board member of NAMM. Currently, he serves as president of Columbus Pro Percussion Inc. and endorses Zildjian, Remo, Noble & Cooley, and Pro Mark.

Rupp emphasizes jazz and drum set techniques rooted in Joe Morello’s methodologies, alongside Latin, funk, and modern styles. His teaching philosophy integrates musical and business skills to prepare students for professional success. He collaborates with the concert percussion department and invites industry professionals like Jeff Hamilton and Carl Allen for masterclasses.
