Paul Brehm is an Associate Professor of Economics and Environmental Studies at Oberlin College, serving as Chair of the Economics Department. He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Michigan (2017) and a BA in Mathematics and Economics from Vassar College (2008). His research focuses on energy and environmental economics, industrial organization, and policy analysis, with notable work on vaccine mandates, oil market efficiency, and resource extraction impacts. He teaches courses in principles of economics, environmental economics, and energy economics.

Research Interests: Brehm’s work spans energy market efficiency, environmental policy design, and the socio-economic impacts of natural resource extraction. Recent projects include analyzing vaccine court decisions’ effects on anti-vaccine discourse, evaluating lottery-based vaccination incentives, and studying private substitutes for electric grid reliability. His interdisciplinary approach combines empirical methods with theoretical modeling to address complex policy questions.
Grants & Awards: Recipient of a National Science Foundation Grant (2022, $593k), Heterodox Academy Grant (2021), and Donald R. Longman Faculty Fellowship (2020–2021). His work has been published in top journals like the RAND Journal of Economics and Journal of the Association of Environmental and Resource Economists.
Teaching & Mentorship: Leads Oberlin’s Economics Honors Program and has taught courses since 2017. Former roles include Graduate Student Instructor Mentor at the University of Michigan.
