Matthew Brehm is a Professor in the Architecture Program at the University of Idaho, part of the College of Art and Architecture. He joined the faculty in 2004 and teaches courses such as ARCH 154: Introduction to Architectural Graphics and ARCH 353/354: Architectural Design III/IV. His academic background includes a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Notre Dame (1989) and a Master of Architecture from the University of Oregon (1998).
Research & Interests:
Professor Brehm’s work focuses on design communication, architectural graphics, and pedagogy, with a particular emphasis on representational sketching and Roman/Italian architectural history. He has authored three books on drawing techniques and pioneered the University of Idaho’s Rome Studies Program, offering students immersive design experiences in Italy.
Publications & Awards:
His publications include award-winning books and peer-reviewed articles on perspective drawing and design education. He has received prestigious awards such as the Hoffman Award for Teaching Excellence (2010) and multiple accolades for his travel sketches, including awards from the American Society of Architectural Illustrators and the Ken Roberts Memorial Delineation Competition.
Labs & Initiatives:
Brehm leads the Rome Studies Program, integrating fieldwork and sketching in Italy with academic coursework. His research also explores the intersection of analog and digital tools in architectural design education.
