Professor Paul Bowness is a faculty member at the University of Oxford, affiliated with the Nuffield Department of Medicine. He holds the academic rank of Professor of Experimental Rheumatology and leads the Bowness Group focused on the immunology of Ankylosing Spondylitis and inflammatory arthritis.
- Education: Medical Degree (1986) from the University of Cambridge; DPhil in Immunology (1993) from Oxford University.
Research interests include the pathogenesis of spondyloarthritis, the role of HLA-B27 in immune dysfunction, and interactions between gut microbiota and the immune system. His work has significant implications for autoimmune diseases and targeted therapies.
Publications demonstrate expertise in HLA-B27 biology, microbiome-immune interactions, and therapeutic mechanisms in arthritis, with recent studies exploring transcriptomics, Th17 cell dynamics, and novel antigen engineering.
- Scientific awards: Michael Mason Prize, British Society of Rheumatology (2000).
Current projects involve collaborative studies with the Nuffield Department of Medicine on immune function in inflammatory arthritis and clinical trials (COREC06/Q1606/139) analyzing blood, joint fluid, and stool samples.
