Paul Arthur is a Professor of Digital Humanities and Social Sciences and Vice-Chancellor’s Professorial Research Fellow at Edith Cowan University (ECU) in Western Australia. He holds dual appointments in the School of Arts and Humanities and has led major research initiatives including the Edith Cowan Centre for Global Issues (2016–21) and ECU’s Society and Culture research theme (2021–22). Previously, he was Australia’s first Professor of Digital Humanities at Western Sydney University (2013–16) and Deputy General Editor of the Australian Dictionary of Biography (2010–13).
His research focuses on digital humanities, globalisation, migration, and cultural heritage. He has secured over A$10M in grants and authored/co-authored 13 books including Open Scholarship in the Humanities (2024), Virtual Voyages: Travel Writing and the Antipodes (2010), and Migrant Nation (2018). Awards include Fellowship of the Royal Historical Society (UK) and multiple visiting professorships across Europe, Asia-Pacific, and North America.
Arthur’s leadership extends to international organisations: he co-chaired centerNet (the global digital humanities network), served on the ADHO Steering Committee, and founded the Australasian Association for Digital Humanities. His current projects include the Time-Layered Cultural Map of Australia and digital preservation of migrant heritage. He also maintains active roles in cultural policy, museum studies, and global research collaborations.
