Paul A.M. Van Lange is Professor of Social Psychology and Chair of the Department of Social and Organizational Psychology at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. He also holds positions as Global Professor at the University of Cologne and Distinguished Research Fellow at the University of Oxford. Van Lange serves as Editor of Current Opinion in Psychology and is a Member of the Royal Holland Society of Sciences.
His research interests span social psychology with particular focus on human cooperation, trust, social dilemmas, prosocial behavior, morality, climate change, refugee issues, and soccer psychology. Van Lange's work applies interdependence theory to understand forgiveness, generosity, empathy, fairness, and retaliation in various contexts. His research employs diverse methodologies including economic games, behavioral experiments, and biological measures (fMRI, hormonal analysis).
Van Lange has published extensively in top journals including Annual Review of Psychology, Psychological Bulletin, and Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. His research trends show increasing focus on climate change, social dilemmas during global crises like the pandemic, and the psychology of social connection ('Vitamin S').
