Paul A. M. van Lange is Professor of Social Psychology at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and Distinguished Research Fellow at the University of Oxford. He is also a Member of the Global Faculty at the University of Cologne, associated with the Key Profile Area of Social and Economic Behavior.
His research program spans human cooperation and trust, extending to global challenges including climate change and the refugee crisis. Van Lange has made significant theoretical contributions to understanding social dilemmas, empathy, fairness, trust mechanisms, social mindfulness, and aggression. His work demonstrates how reputation and subtle forms of cooperation can play crucial roles in promoting trust across various social contexts.
Van Lange's publications reveal consistent focus on cooperative behavior during crises, with his recent work examining cooperation during climate change and the COVID-19 pandemic. His theoretical frameworks like the CLASH model (CLimate, Aggression, and Self-control in Humans) have provided important explanations for cross-cultural patterns of aggression and violence.
