Prof. Patrizia Di Bello is a Professor of History and Theory of Photography at Birkbeck, University of London, serving as Head of the Department of History of Art since 2003. She holds a BA in Photography, Film and Television from the London College of Printing, an MA in History of Art from Birkbeck, and a PhD examining 19th-century women’s photographic albums. Her research explores intersections between photography, sculpture, gender, and visual culture, with notable works including Women’s Albums and Photography in Victorian England (2007) and Sculptural Photographs (2018).
She co-directs the History and Theory of Photography Research Centre and oversees the Jo Spence Memorial Library Archive. As Editor-in-Chief of History of Photography, she also contributes to Art History and Photographies. Her supervision spans 13 doctoral projects addressing topics like feminist photographic networks, architectural photography’s gender dynamics, and postcolonial visual histories.
Di Bello’s current research focuses on second-wave feminist photographic magazines and the role of women in 19th-century photographic practices. She is actively involved with the National Portrait Gallery’s Research Advisory Panel and serves as a trustee for Mayday Rooms and the Feminist Library.
